“Viscera” is a dance-theater work that delves into themes of the body including injury, aging, disability, and somatic experiences within the world of dance. Through a combination of contemporary dance choreography, video art projection from Atlanta-based artist Darya Fard, and a blended soundscape of clips from 20+ hours of interviews with Atlanta based dancers woven with Sean Dahlman (Cagliari, Italy) scores, the piece illuminates the physical and emotional journeys dancers face over time. Central to the work is an exploration of references to the musculoskeletal systems, the reality of injury and disability, the challenges of aging in a culture that often prioritizes youth, and the complex ways in which dancers experience and interpret their bodies. The depths of these themes are explored through movement, video, and with collaboration from the dance community, creating a layered experience that offers a multifaceted view of the dancer’s body, reinterpreted as a fully immersive environment that transcends traditional performance boundaries and allowing the audience to experience the dancers’ journeys from multiple perspectives.
