Director’s note:

“Viscera”, quite literally means our intestines, our vital organs, or what is inside that can’t be seen from the surface. I wanted to make this piece as a platform to share more about my personal experiences with chronic pain but also to highlight the complexities of the body, specifically the dancer’s body and what it goes through in our careers. This piece “reads” like a collection of short stories, with each section exploring different themes such as the musculoskeletal system, injuries, chronic pain, disability, aging, ageism, ableism, somatic experiences and more. Having the opportunity to experiment with this concept through Syncrhonicity’s Stripped Bare project and interviewing my fellow dancers has been a gift. Through the exchange of stories with my fellow artists, I noticed many threads connecting; our collective passion for this artform, a love of collaboration and a hope that we can all be part of creating a more equitable and inclusive dance community for future generations.

Thank you Synchronicity Theater for this opportunity! Support for this project was also provided by The City Of Atlanta’s Mayor’s Office Of Cultural Affairs through the 2024-2025 Emerging Artist Award. Thank you City Dance & Music for providing rehearsal space for this project through their Artist in Residence program.

Sean Dahlman, composer and visual artist collaborator

Sean Dahlman is a composer and video artist from Boise, Idaho, USA. Sean started his artist career by composing for silent movies and performing in local indie bands. This eventually led him to explore his own video art; utilizing slow-motion cameras, he creates unique visualizers without the need for special effects. This created a passion for finding extreme aesthetics in brief moments. Years of surveying for the Forest Service inspired him to use native and local flora as inspiration for his videography. The videos for this performance were filmed in Blanca, Spain, at the AADK Artist Residency, and in the mountains of Idaho.
